Re: Combustible Piping, Sentences 3.1.7.2.(1) & 3.1.7.3.(1)

With reference to your letter of October 24, 1987, regarding plastic piping located above a dropped ceiling. Refer also to Appeal No. 947 for some general provisions applicable to this appeal.

Combustible piping would be acceptable if located above a dropped ceiling only if the ceiling did not form a required component of a fire separation. A horizontal separation often consists of a floor/ceiling assembly, with the entire assembly providing a required fire resistance rating.

If therefore the ceiling formed part of a fire separation, then Sentences 3.1.7.2.(1) and 3.1.7.3.(1) would apply, necessitating testing with the piping included. In addition, the provisions of Sentence 3.5.4.3.(1) could be applicable.
